What's the talk about?

We have all been brought up to see radiation, especially nuclear radiation, as quite exceptionally dangerous -- unimaginably dangerous, even. But let's ask the question, why do we believe that radiation is dangerous? And, in fact, how dangerous is it? Or, if we use it carefully as we have learnt to do with fire, is nuclear technology to be welcomed? And has Fukushima changed anything?

Professor Wade Allison is a nuclear and medical physicist at Oxford University. Wade is the author Radiation and Reason, copies of which will be on sale, priced at £12.
